The ATO has been tasked to drive adoption of Peppol e-invoicing across the Australian economy as part of the Government’s Digital Economic Strategy.
The economic benefits of E-invoicing are:
- up to 28 billion over 10 years to the Australian economy, it is up to 70% cheaper to process an electronic invoice than a paper invoice
- increased efficiencies by reduced invoice processing costs and providing visibility to support strategic supplier relationship management and effective cash management
- reduced risks of virus attacks and billing schemes
- less handling errors
This adoption has already started; all Federal Government Agencies have a mandated adoption date of 1 July 2022, (32 are already enabled), with state governments (NSW has 44 agencies already enabled and Queensland have just committed to e-invoicing in their 2021-22 Budget) and local councils (the first council is already enabled) joining in.
