SUPPORTING THE PROFESSIONALS SHAPING QUEENSLAND COMMUNITIES



The Governance Advisory Service provides advice and support to Queensland councils on core governance policies, approaches and practices. 

The Governance Advisor will assist councils develop and refine core governance policies, procedures and practices to meet their individual needs.  This assistance can be as limited as a health check on the suite of policies in place or extend to the development and implementation of core governance policies and guidelines across council.

The three key aims of this two-year funded position is to support Queensland local Governments in:

  • Developing a library of key policy, reporting and monitoring systems 
  • Support the implementation of good governance (best) practices in councils of varying sizes and
  • Work with individual councils to tailor documents, train staff and assist in the implementation and consistent adoption across councils.

This isn’t a one size fits all approach, with the objective to create a suite of templates and guides to support councils and improve awareness and importance of good governance practices.

This position has been created because we know the benefits of good governance practices, policies and procedures include:

  • Improving efficiency
  • Improving consistency
  • Assisting councils to be legislatively compliant
  • Improving service delivery

Cost for Service

This position is funded, for two years, by the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works, who will have a positive and encouraging role in promoting and supporting this service.

The service is offered at minimal cost to councils for those who receive direct onsite support.. 

To manage the limited resource, a methodology to prioritise interested councils has been developed.  The levels of service have been determined based on a process of acknowledging a council’s gaps and support required.  Refer to the FAQ’s for more information.
